Question

How can I get rid of my depression?

Answer

Thank you for sharing this with us and we will try to answer your question with the utmost care. Depression is a very serious and complicated medical mental health issue that can vary greatly for different people. There can be many causes to why people are depressed and also many different solutions to help people to get better or to cope with the illness.

Depression can come in many forms and be linked to different illnesses like stress, anxiety, bipolar disorder and postpartum, to name but a few.

We know that mental health issues such as depression have not been very well understood in the past and have not been taken seriously, but we take it very seriously as do the medical profession of today in the UK.

The first thing we want to do therefore is to encourage you to do is to see a trusted Medical Doctor. God created us as a unity of body, mind and spirit. It is often very difficult to distinguish between spiritual and psychological elements in our lives - and both may affect our physical well being. For that reason, when we are experiencing serious problems of depression, it is always important to see our doctor, so that any clinical issues can be attended to. There may be a chemical imbalance in your body that is causing you to be depressed and medication can help correct this imbalance. There is nothing wrong with admitting you have a depression issue and the doctor will know how to assess the situation and suggest help and treatment if necessary.

Secondly we want to encourage you to speak with a trusted friend about these issues. If you do not want to speak to a friend then perhaps you could contact a local church to speak with the pastor or church leader. They will hopefully be able to counsel you through any difficulties that may be causing your depression. I know they would be delighted to try and further answer you as well as pray with you and give you further support as you continue on your spiritual journey. You can use our UK church finder map here: Find a Church

You may find that sharing the issues with a friend helps you to assess them yourself and get the support of friends and family to take a positive step out of a depressive mindset.

Thirdly we would like to encourage you to talk to God about your depression. Prayer and meditation on the promises of God can help people clear their mind of negative thoughts and try to focus on the positive in life. We believe that as people made in the image of God he does not want us to be depressed and can help us through times of darkness.

Jesus said: "Come to Me all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest". (Matthew 11:28)

Many people in the Bible suffered with some form of depression or anxiety and wrote things like: Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why do you moan within me?

Their answer was to: Hope in God; for I still praise Him, the salvation of my face, and my God. (Psalm 42:5)

In summary there is no quick fix or easy answer to get rid of depression. We wish this were the case. We do hope though that the answers above will help you. Seek professional medical advice, attend and speak to you local church leaders and be encouraged through the reading of the scriptures.

Here are some more Bible Verses for your further consideration:
