Ask a questionQ & A
I have a fear of losing my parents and never seeing them again. It's stopped me going to church and I feel empty. How can I get rid of this fear?
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately one of the few certainties in life is that our life will end one day, unless Jesus returns beforehand. Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that God has placed eternity in our hearts, so we are all inevitably drawn to wondering about eternity, and about our own mortality. The Bible tells us that we will die as a result of the sin which affects us all from birth (please see Romans 3:23), and although that is the end of our physical earthly life, it is not the end of us spiritually.
When we die there are two places we can end up: heaven or hell. All those who have heard the Gospel and responded to it positively will go to heaven. Responding positively to the Gospel means recognising and repenting for your sins, and asking forgiveness of them by believing what the Bible says about Jesus. It means believing that Jesus came to earth as the Son of God, and that He lived a perfect sinless life, and that He freely and obediently sacrificed himself on the cross at Calvary to pay the penalty that God justly and righteously demands for our sin. It means believing that He died there, and was buried and that on the third day He rose again from the dead, and then ascended to heaven where He is now at the right hand of God the Father, to plead that your case has been answered by him, and your penalty has been paid by Him.
If you and your parents sincerely believe this, and have invited Jesus to take control of your lives as your Lord and Saviour, then you should know that Jesus has indeed saved you, and if so then you will all definitely end up in heaven. If you have accepted all this then your ‘old’ lives would already be over, and you would have started new lives, with the gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling within you.
You would each have a new life, free from any condemnation for your sins. In other words you would be ‘Born Again Christians’. It may seem very exclusive, but the bible tells us that the only true Christian is a born again Christian; all Christians must be born again in this way. That is the wonderful promise of the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He came to earth to save sinners! He is the only way to get to heaven (see John 14:6)
You do not mention whether you or your parents have accepted Jesus as their Saviour in the above manner. If you have, then none of you have anything to really worry about because whatever happens here on earth, you are always guaranteed a happy ending in heaven forever!
There will inevitably still be mourning and grieving by the survivors when one of you dies, but the survivors would be able to rest in the comfort and confident hope that God will keep his promises, and that you will all be reunited in Heaven together for eternity, where there are no more tears, and no more mourning. You will have the comfort of knowing that your loved one has simply been called home to heaven ahead of you, and will be there waiting for you when you are called home. This is a great joy and comfort, but even this surely pales beside the prospect of knowing that you will be spending all eternity in the presence of the awesome creator of the whole Universe. You will be basking within the Glory of God forever! The greatest joy of heaven for us should not be about seeing loved ones, but ultimately enjoying the One who is Love!
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love (1 John 4:7-8).
However, because you say that you now feel somewhat empty inside, then perhaps you have not taken these most important and literally vital steps. Perhaps the hole you feel inside is a "God shaped hole" that can only be filled by the Holy Spirit. If this is the case then you all need to do something about it, and quickly. If you are indeed willing, and want that empty feeling to be replaced by the lasting joy that can only come from knowing Jesus as your Saviour, then please act now.
Please read Ephesians 2:4-9 for a confirmation of this amazing promise. If you can sincerely accept all of this then there are numerous other blessings that will follow. Please also see Galatians 5:22-23 for the Fruit of the Spirit you can begin to expect in your life.
Becoming a Christian is not a guarantee of lasting happiness on earth, indeed Jesus calls you to pick up your cross and deny yourself, but he also promises that His burden is light and His yoke is easy. This is because true believers are given the strength and resources to do the good works that God has planned for them, and the ability to do them joyfully, despite the apparent hardships involved. The more you can surrender your heart and will to God the more room you make for the Holy Spirit to move into it. Feelings of emptiness will be replaced by a greater sense of purpose.
