Ask a questionQ & A
God has delivered me from my anger. How can I serve him?
Thank you so much for your honest spiritual enquiry about anger and serving the Lord.
I am pleased that your anger has left you and you are longing to serve the Lord. Remember to thank God for the change he has made in your life and for the prompting of the Holy Spirit within you to service.
If you are not an active member in your local Bible believing Church, start attending and speak to the leader. I'm sure they would be pleased to hear the change in your life and the passion you have for serving Jesus. Whether it is through stacking chairs, working with the children or preaching from the pulpit, your local church leader, who hopefully knows you well, will be able to assign you a role based on your skills, aptitude and longing to serve.
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you (Hebrews 13:17).
Each and every Christian, including you, will have a spiritual gift given to us from the Holy Spirit. As Paul writes, to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:7). Do you know what your spiritual gifts are? Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone (1 Corinthians 12:4-6). Pray that God would show you what your spiritual gifts are, that he may equip you and give you opportunity to use them.
Similarly, as we function by being part of a local Bible believing church, these gifts will become evident, both to ourselves and also importantly, will be confirmed by others.
Let the safe environment of the church become your training ground. I would suggest that sometimes just ‘trying out’ different things, for example, leading a Bible study or coordinating an activity, may either confirm or eliminate where your spiritual gifts lie.
Secondly, it may be that you are already operating in your gifting, but are not yet fully aware of it, so ask yourself what are you passionate about? What is it that makes you feel fully alive or moves you? For example do you have a heart for communicating the truth of God’s word; caring for the needs of people or for administration? I would suggest there may be a connection between certain activities you are already involved in and your spiritual gifting.
Finally, it is important that you speak to God directly about where your gifts and ministry lie. Speak to your leaders, but also speak to God himself, and allow him to show you these things. As you wait on God, he may show and direct you onto the path you ought to take. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left (Isaiah 30:21).
In summary, thank the Lord for the change he has and is making in your life, and speak to your local church leaders about roles that you could fulfil. Pray that God would show you your spiritual gifts, giving you opportunities to use them with his strength and guidance.
