Question

I attend church regularly and have rededicated my life to Christ. I really want a very good relationship with God and to receive the Holy Spirit in my life but I struggle with depression and anger.

Answer

Thank you for sharing your testimony and current life situation. I am glad to hear that you attend Church, dedicated your life to Christ and read the Bible. I am sorry to hear that you are not satisfied and struggle with different things.

Regarding having the Holy Spirit, this happens when we first are made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ. The Spirit is given to the repentant believer as a seal of the change that has been made and the promise of the new life to come. Consider this verse:

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:13-14)

I believe we are also to go on to continually be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) over time as we grow to be more like Christ. We can do this by doing what you have already described. Be committed to Christ, His Church, His Word and prayer. (See Acts 2).

Sometimes the truth is that the Christian life can seem quite average and normal. I wonder what more you expect from the Christian life? Jesus spent about 30 years of his life just living in a normal way with a simple job. I know hundreds of Christians who are filled with the Spirit and live a quiet and simple life. In fact this is probably how the Church spread so rapidly in the early times. People lived simple, honest lives, with Jesus at the centre and shared the Good News of Jesus at every opportunity.

Regarding depression I would like to encourage you to seek medical help. There may be a chemical imbalance in your body which can be addressed by medicine. Secondly I would encourage you to share this information with a trusted leader at Church and ask for prayer off the leaders. Many people in the Bible and also in Church history have suffered from depression. Thirdly, there are a number of answers on depression that are already available on the LookingforGod website, viewable by clicking the following link: www.lookingforGod.com/questions-and-answers Finally keep praying about this. Do not give up. God is with you!

God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us (2 Corinthians 7:6)

Regarding anger, there are some verses which say that it is okay to be angry. As long as we are angry at the right things. God is angry at injustice and sin and therefore we are also to be angry at these things. If you get angry and it leads to sin then again I would encourage you to pray about this and ask for God's help in this area. Speak to a trusted leader in the Church about this. I personally was angry as a young man, but God has given me peace and now I do not find myself getting angry often. When I do pray I find peace; why not try to take 5 minutes away and calm down in the presence of God?

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger (Ephesians 4:26)

I do hope this general answer to your question goes some way to helping you find peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. If you want to know more about what Jesus has done for you please watch the video on the main part of our site: www.lookingforGod.com
