Ask a questionQ & A
How can I have more confidence and stay close to God?
Thank you for this ask for advice on how to stay close to God, feel confident, and what to do when you feel far away from Him. These things are quite common to all Christians as we are in a battle against the evil unseen things that war against us and God. Consider this verse:
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (Ephesians 6:10-13)
The passage after this calls us to put on the armour of God in a prayerful way:
- Item 1 is the belt of truth. Are you reading the Bible and believing it to be true?
- Item 2 is breastplate of righteousness. Have you been made righteous through faith in Jesus' saving death and resurrection?
- Item 3 are the feet of readiness. Do you believe the Gospel that should give you peace, and are you ready and willing to share it with anyone you meet?
- Item 4 is the shield of faith. We use it to rebuke the lies that the enemy throw at us.
- Item 5 is the helmet of salvation. Are you confident that you are saved?
- Item 6 is the sword of the Spirit – the word of God. Are you using it to combat the issues of life?
We are also called to continue to pray at all times: praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints (Ephesians 6:18)
Realising that God is with you at all times and he wants to lead you through life should give you confidence.
"It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed." (Deuteronomy 31:8)
There is no magic cure or simple thing to do to feel confident and close to God. We need to realise we are in a spiritual battle. There will be high times and low times. The good news is that Jesus has already won! Those who put their trust in his saving death and resurrection are joining him on the way to the promised land of rest. Are you in the battle? Are you heaven bound?
In summary, keep praying, keep reading God's word, keep asking to be filled with the Holy Spirit, be bold for God and remind yourself of the Cross daily.
And Jesus said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels." (Luke 9:23-26)
Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18)
