Questions & answers    FEELINGS    Peace & Tranquillity

I do believe in God, but doubt. How can I overcome this feeling? I have seen in the past how he has helped me and got me through, but I still doubt.

Thank you for sharing your situation and feelings. I am sorry to hear that you are going through a hard time. I will pray for you.

My basic response is to wonder how strong your relationship is with Jesus Christ? Do you know that he died to forgive our sin? That he rose again to give us new life? Sometimes people I meet think that they know God but are not praying to him through Jesus Christ: Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).

If you do know Christ then it is common to find seasons of doubt and hardship. Jesus never promised us a simple, easy or comfortable life. But he did promise to never leave us, to always be with us and to secure our future hope of heaven.

Jesus said "I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name (1 Peter 4:12-15).

Though you may not feel like God is with you, he said that he will always be with you if you are his follower. We must learn to not trust our emotions first. The truth of Scripture is more important; our feelings will change all the time, but Jesus does not change.

God knows that some people will doubt and that is why he built the people in the Church to support and encourage one another:

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt (Jude 1:20-22).

I would like to encourage you to pray this simple prayer:

Jesus, I believe, help my unbelief

Taken from this passage of the Bible:

"But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief" (Mark 9:22-24).
