I enjoy going to church but I feel like I'm in a vacuum. I used to be close to God but now I'm not. I want to trust God and live for him.

Thank you for your very honest statement. This is very encouraging to hear that you want to be closer to God. By saying this, I believe you have done the right thing and taken the first step in getting back closer to God.

Firstly it is most important that you repent, turn back to God and recommit your life to him as often as is needed. For some people this is a daily need. We are encouraged to take communion as often as possible to remember what Jesus has done for us. His body was put on the cross and his blood shed for the forgiveness of our sin and new life. We are new creations in Christ; nothing can separate us from him.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

Here are some practical things to consider:

1) How is your daily Bible reading?
- why not start reading a Bible reading plan or Bible in a year?
- are you getting good time in the word? Are you being fed?
- are you memorising Bible passages to meditate on through the day?
- are you under the authority of God's word in the local Church?

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him (Proverbs 30:5)

2) How is your prayer life?
- consider meeting to pray with friends / family
- attend local Church prayer meetings

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working (James 5:16)

3) are you committed to a local Church?
- are you submitting to Christ and his Church?
- are you using your spiritual gifts to bless others?

...not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near (Hebrews 10:25).

There is no special formula or prayer to get closer to God. It is only God who can do a spiritual work in us, although the fact that you want to get closer to God is a sign of him working in you. We have the guidance of the Bible in how to walk the Christian life. We are called to follow Christ, obey his word and be led by the Holy Spirit. These things above are just the basics of the Christian life. I hope that in examining your heart the Holy Spirit will encourage you and lead you into a closer walk with God.
