Ask a questionQ & A
The Bible says 'delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.' How can we delight in the Lord?
Thank you so much for your delightful spiritual enquiry.
I believe the Bible verse you are quoting is Psalm 37:4 where it says:
Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him (Psalm 37:3-7).
Throughout the Bible, the verb 'delight' is also translated as 'delicate', arguably a much more feminine term. We can see this in the following passage:
"The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her delicateness and sensitivity" (Deuteronomy 28:56)
‘Delighting’ in the Lord then, seems to be a delicate and sensitive tenderness toward God.
However, when we think about the women in our life; wives, mothers, daughters and sisters, we may not see a 'delicate' delight from them, but one that shows passion and preciousness toward others.
To delight ourselves in God is in all ways and in all things to exhibit our preciousness of Him. To delight ourselves in God is to exhibit the value we have of Him, that all of which we value and count precious, whether it be an object, a person, a relationship or a project, we tend to put first in our lives. We attend to it with tenderness, we take care of it as a being precious to us. In other words, to delight ourselves in God, is quite simply to exhibit our value of Him by putting Him first.
If we look again at Psalm 37, we can see from the verbs the way that we delight in God:
Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; (Psalm 37:3-7) [emphasis added]
So, in summary then, how do we delight ourselves in God? Well, it is by Trusting Him, by Dwelling in His faithfulness, by Receiving of His goodness, by Committing our way to Him, by Resting in Him, and by Waiting patiently for Him. How do we know if we are truly delighting in Him? All of our life will be a reflection toward the purpose of God, we will be transformed more into the image of Christ, and as the Psalm tells us, He shall give us the desires of our God in our hearts.
