Question

I was raised in a Christian home but I have never felt God's presence. How do I feel God in my life?

Answer

Thank you so much for contacting us and for sharing your feelings concerning your relationship with God.

I can really sympathise with you as I myself was in a similar situation.

I too went to church and got involved as you have done with reading God’s word and praying. I was even baptised. However, I still felt a fraud.

You say you have been raised in a Christian home which is really encouraging; thank God for this. Sometimes, however, that might bring its own issues with perhaps pressure to conform. Even so, please don’t stop doing what other Christian people around you are doing. This is good!

However, for me, even when I was doing what was good and proper, helpful and useful, I knew that I still wasn’t right with God and I didn’t have that sense of that peace and “rightness” either.

Interestingly you say you have never 'felt God presence'. I can imagine there is a sense of desperation at the way you feel.

If we trusted in our feelings alone for our salvation then we would be up one day and down the other. So, it’s not really about how we feel, or even trying a number of different things because both will lead us up the wrong path. The good news is that you can have a relationship with God and that is found in knowing and having faith in His Son Jesus Christ. Faith that says

I know I can't trust my feelings, God, but I'm trusting You for forgiveness through the good times and bad times because I know Your word says that You will never leave me nor forsake me.

Jesus came that you and I might know Him personally. With you coming from a Christian home I assume you already know that. Sometimes though, we can get ourselves into difficulty with our feelings about God and feel that He’s far away. Factually though, according to His word, He’s never far from us!

God is closer than you think and knows your struggles with trying to know Him. In real faith take Him at His word and simply trust what He says in the bible that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13). We come to know God in a real and very personal way.

You don't need to spend the rest of your life waiting for Him to 'do' something, He already has! He is so concerned for you that His Son Jesus gave His life for you! He wants to be with you for the rest of your life and into eternity. Here are some verses below for you to meditate upon.

But I have trusted in Your mercy; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. (Psalm 13:5)

"Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest". (Matthew 11:28)

In summary then, don’t fret and worry about your feelings. God says come to me, no more doubts and I will give you rest. Indeed, He also says:

"I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5).

Once you have made that commitment to trust Him; You are His forever and for eternity. Remember that! Pursue after Him, let go of your feelings and trust Jesus. He will make Himself known to you.
