Ask a questionQ & A
I have a secret gambling addiction and want to give it up. I feel ashamed and need help.
Thank you for sharing your very personal struggle. It is a very brave and important first step towards freedom from any habit or addiction that has a hold of us.
I want to let you know that you are not alone. There are thousands of people who struggle with issues of gambling.
There is hope. I believe that you are able to change with God's help and to find freedom from this issue. As a Christian I have seen change in so many areas of my life and know hundreds of other people who, with the help of God, have turned away from habits that ruin their lives.
Firstly I want to encourage you to seek professional help. If you live in the UK there are many agencies that can help you anonymously. Consider contacting one or more of the following:
CAP Release Groups: (type your postcode into their map to see if there is a group near you) CAP Release Groups
Gamble Aware: Gamble Aware
NHS: NHS Gambling Support
Secondly I want to encourage you to seek the love and support of a local Church. I personally believe that only God, through Jesus, can truly and fully change a person. Consider this Bible verse:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself (2 Corinthians 5:17-19)
The old can pass away, and a new start can be found in Jesus. He died to forgive us all the wrong we have done. He promises to send the Holy Spirit into our lives to help us change and become more like Jesus. Do you know him?
You may feel ashamed, but Jesus does not judge you. He offers forgiveness and a new start for free.
Thirdly I would then encourage you to tell your closest friends and family to alert them to the problem and ask for their support and accountability. This will be a very tough thing to do. Perhaps consider writing a letter or email. Try and be honest and get it out in the open. This may bring pain at first, but will lay a foundation to build a new start on.
