Why do people wish others a Merry Christmas once a year and the rest of the time don't do anything? There's nothing merry about Christmas if you don't have friends, family, or children.

Thank you for your honest question. It sounds like Christmas is a difficult time for you and if this is the case I am sorry. Many people struggle at Christmas as they think of lost loved ones and broken past relationships. This time of year is presented as joyful by the media, but often people have a lot of hidden hurt. I will pray for you to know the love and peace of God at this time.

The reason people say 'Merry Christmas' dates back to the Victorian times. It is a common greeting which people use at this time of year. Christmas is celebrated in the UK on the 25th December and it is a Christian holiday to remember the birth of Jesus Christ.

If you do not have friends or family, you can still be merry at this time. Jesus came to earth to give us forgiveness from our wrong and a new life. This is the message of Christmas: hope to a broken world through Jesus. You can also find a spiritual family and friends at a local Church. I would like to encourage you to go along and make new friends.

An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
"Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us) (Matthew 1:20-23).

Many people only go to church once or twice a year, perhaps at Christmas and Easter, but they are open every Sunday of the year and often have meetings throughout the week too. This is a great community to get involved with.

In summary, people say Merry Christmas to each other as a simple,e greeting and to remind people of the reason for Christmas: Jesus Christ. I encourage you to get involved with your local church, where you can be involved in the active Christian community.
