Question

Who are the writers of Psalms?

Answer

Thank you for your Biblical enquiry about the writers of the Psalms.

The Psalms were written by many different people across a period of around a thousand years in the history of Israel. These 150 pieces reflect all and every emotion of the human heart.

The authors are all men and range from:

  • King David
  • Solomon, King David's son
  • Moses as having the prayer of Psalm 90 assigned to him, whilst
  • Another group of Psalms are ascribed to Asaph,
  • The sons of Korah wrote some more of the Psalms
  • Psalm 88 is attributed to Heman
  • Ethan the Ezrahite wrote Psalm 99.
  • Around 50 of them have no particular designated author.

In summary, the Christian church has valued the Psalms for two millennia applying Colossians 3:16, where is says:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

In conclusion, the Psalms were written by a variety of different people over a long period of time and covering many different emotions and styles. The Psalms have been held in high regard since they were written and are part of the Holy Scriptures. The New Testament encourages us to use them as part of our worship to God.

Here are some more Bible Verses for your further consideration:

  • Psalm 1
  • Luke 24:44
  • Ephesians 5:19
