Ask a questionQ & A
How many times did God call Samuel?
Thank you for your question about God calling Samuel. This is a popular Bible story and I am pleased that you have an interest in the Bible.
The story you mention comes from 1 Samuel 3, and I encourage you to read the story for yourself. When we read the text, we learn that God calls Samuel a total of four times before Samuel responds to God speaking to him.
In 1 Samuel 3:8, we read the Lord called Samuel again the third time. It is this time that Eli perceives it is the Lord calling Samuel, and tells him to respond with ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’ (1 Samuel 3:9).
And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” (1 Samuel 3:10)
It is good and encouraging to see that God called Samuel, but what about you? Perhaps you find a connection with the story of Samuel because you also feel God calling you.
God loves you and is calling you, as he calls everyone, to trust in Jesus and receive the gift of eternal life.
God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:9)
It is important to recognise that you have made mistakes and done wrong things. Like everyone else, you need God's forgiveness.
Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. (Romans 4:7)
God wants to give you this blessing of forgiveness and eternal life.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
It may be that, just like Samuel, you do not know how to respond to God's call. All you have to do is to tell Him that you know you are a sinner and that you are sorry and want to change. Invite the Lord Jesus Christ to enter your life as your Saviour and Lord. He always answers such a prayer, if it is made sincerely and with faith that Jesus is our only hope. He will accept you. His promise is,
"All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out." (John 6:37)
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Joel 2:32)
