Ask a questionQ & A
Why did Yahoshua son of Miriam change his name to Jesus?
Thank you for this interesting question about the name of Jesus.
The answer is in fact rather simple. The names Yahoshua and Miriam are simply Hebrew names which were transliterated into Greek in the New Testament gospels, which were written in Greek rather than Hebrew because at the time of Jesus only a minority of Jewish people in Israel spoke Hebrew; Greek had become the common language.
In Messianic Jewish congregations in which Hebrew is spoken, the Hebrew names are still used. In the Christian Church since the time of the New Testament, the Hebrew of the Old Testament and the Greek of the New Testament were then translated into various languages. So Yahoshua, or Yeshua, became Iesous in Greek, and in English, Jesus. Miriam became Mary in English. You will find slightly different ways of turning these names into various other languages across the world, but the names themselves did not change.
The important question however, is whether or not you will believe in the name of Jesus to save you. As is written "salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)
The Bible declares that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), and this creates a separation between us as sinners and a perfect, righteous God. However, Jesus, the Son of God, left heaven and was born in order that he could live the perfect life and show us to live. It was on the cross that God shows his love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
