Ask a questionQ & A
Are National Savings bonds gambling? Are they biblically ethical?
Thank you for your interesting question regarding finances.
The Bible does not directly state that gambling is unethical. However the love of money is clearly spoken against in the Bible (1 Timothy 6:10). Saving money is not discouraged in the Bible. The key to the matter is that it comes down to faith and trusting in God to provide for your future. I cannot tell you not to use savings bonds but could challenge you to consider using the money for more beneficial things. When we give to the work of God we are storing up treasure in heaven and not on earth. Consider Jesus' words:
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:19-21).
In summary, there is nothing specifically in the bible about gambling being unethical, but we are called to be good stewards of our finances. Overall, do not place your trust in money and the pursuit of money, but instead place your trust in Jesus Christ, who gives an inheritance that does not fade or rot; eternal life and a restored relationship with God.
If you have never put your trust in Jesus Christ, then I urge you to do so today. Ask for the forgiveness of your sins, paid for by his death on the cross, and place your trust in his life giving power, shown by his rising from the dead.
