Question

What is the meaning of Pentecost?

Answer

Thank you for this question about Pentecost. It is a Greek word which literally translates into English as "the fiftieth day". It was originally celebrated by God's people after the law was given to Moses. It is celebrated by Christians as the time when God's Holy Spirit 'fell' upon the disciples of Jesus Christ as the Church was born and sent forth into the world on the mission of reaching people. The bible tells us:

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)

Jesus promised that when he died and rose again he would ascend into heaven and then send the Holy Spirit into the believers to:

  1. Help them live holy lives for God (2 Corinthians 3:18)
  2. Guide their lives (John 16:13)
  3. Guarantee the eternal inheritance waiting for them in heaven (2 Corinthians 1:22)
  4. Empower them to do mighty things for God and speak with authority the truth of the Gospel. (Matthew 10:20)

Any follower of Jesus who truly trusts in his death and resurrection receives the gift of the Holy Spirit for these things. It is impossible to know God and not possess the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost was simply the first day that these things took place. People have received and have been filled with the Holy Spirit ever since as the Church grows all across the world.
