Ask a questionQ & A
What is basic theme of Christian faith?
Thank you for this great question about Christianity. There are different ways of answering this question, but in simple terms there is one main theme to Christianity.
The first is that it is the truth revealed from God: in nature, in a trustworthy Bible, and supremely in Jesus Christ the Son of God incarnate.
Nature tells us by its beauty and order that there is a Creator. The evil performed by human beings tells us that we are sinners, and our consciences tell us that we get things wrong a great deal. The Bible is the truth from God, preserved from corruption so that what we have is what God intended for us to have: a sure and certain guide to the truth, especially about our need for God. Jesus is the Son of God come to earth and so has divine authority. His words and works teach us the truth in human life as the Bible does in the written word. I believe that the basic theme of the Bible is about knowing God and Jesus Christ whom he sent. This can be summed up as 'knowing God and enjoying him forever'. It says in the Bible:
"And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17:3)
We are created to know and enjoy God both on earth and in the age to come. Our sins and rebellion have separated us from Him. Jesus died to take the punishment for this sin in our place, so we can be brought back into the relationship that God intended us to have.
I believe that we are saved from sin, death and satan by faith alone; faith in Jesus Christ alone. There is nothing that we can do to earn God. Even the faith we put in Christ is a gift from Him. However, once we do become true believers, God asks us to give Him our total loyalty and obedience. To know how to do that, we have the Bible, which is sufficient to teach us all God wants us to know about Himself and His ways.
In summary, Christianity is a definite set of beliefs found in the Bible, a spiritual experience of God through Jesus Christ, and a way of life based on Jesus' teachings and empowered by His Spirit within us.
