Ask a questionQ & A
Can anyone see God and talk to him? How can we get in touch with God?
Thank you very much for your question. From the way you have asked the question it would appear that you are already aware that God is real and alive, and that you would like to start to form a relationship with Him. I just want to start by telling you that this is the most important thing anyone can do in their life on this earth!
The God of the bible is the one true God, but He exists in three persons simultaneously, namely God the Father, to whom you are probably referring, God the Son, otherwise known as Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit.
Genesis, the first book of the bible tells how God the Father first created everything, including the first people in His image, Adam and Eve. They lived in Eden in the presence of God, and talked with Him face to face until they committed the first sin. Mankind has been banished from God’s presence ever since then, because God is completely Holy and Pure and cannot tolerate sin in His presence. The sin that all people have in their hearts has continued to create a barrier between us and God ever since.
When Jesus came to Earth some 2000 years ago, thousands of people saw him and talked to him and listened to him. All the most important details of his time on Earth are covered by the first 4 books of the New Testament, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and reading these will explain the reasons that God the Father sent his only Son to Earth. Jesus’ mission on Earth was basically a search and rescue mission. He came to search out all the people like yourself who want to know God, and to show them how they can indeed get in touch with God, and can eventually spend all eternity in heaven in the presence of God.
Before we reach heaven it is not possible for us to see God the Father. In Exodus 33 Moses asks to see God in His glory, but God explains to Moses in verse 20 that it is not possible for man to see his face and live.
So, to answer the first part of your question is that ever since Adam and Eve sinned for the first time and were banished from the Garden of Eden (see Genesis 3) we cannot see God whilst we are alive on Earth. This may sound like bad news but it is for our own protection. Think of it as looking directly at the Sun. If you do this you will cause serious harm to your eyes. God made the sun (and everything else!) but He is far greater than all His creations, thus the consequences of looking directly at God are far greater. God does not want to harm any of His children hence we cannot see Him here.
Happily however, the second part of your question has a far more positive answer! God wants to talk to us; he wants us all to know Him. This is what praying is all about. Prayer is simply us getting in touch with God. We have to do it by prayer as we cannot do it face to face. The bible has much to say on prayer; with the first mention of prayer comes very soon after the banishment from Eden, at the end of Genesis 4:26
At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord.
Jesus’ mission on earth was to open up a channel for people to talk directly to God through prayer. He did this by paying the penalty for the sin on the cross at Calvary. The first step towards becoming a Christian is to recognise that there is a barrier of sin between you and God, then to accept that Jesus is who he says he is in the bible, and to ask for forgiveness through Him, and for help to turn away from sin in the future.
Some verses from the bible that will help underline this are to be found at Jeremiah 29:12-13 and Jeremiah 33:3 amongst others in the Old Testament, and Romans 8:26 in the New Testament helps explain the Spirit’s role in prayer.
In summary you can get in touch with God by learning to pray. Learning to pray is like learning to ride a bicycle or learning to swim. You have to ride the bicycle to learn, and you have to swim to learn, but once you have done it you always know how to do it.
