Do you believe in baptism? Why do you baptise "in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit"?

Thank you for your great question about baptism and who it involves.

I do believe in baptism. I was baptised at the age of 15 after I believed that Jesus died for me. Baptism is a symbol of the believer being buried with Christ (going under the water) and being raised to new life through Christ's resurrection (coming out of the water). I have also had the honour of helping to baptise people who are following Christ.

I was also 'Christened' as a child. This involved my parents making promises to bring me us in the Christian faith. Sadly that did not happen at the time.

Many Protestant Churches do believe in infant baptism. This is usually for believer's children, they would also baptise adults who come to a saving faith later in life.

In the Protestant Church we are baptised in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is due to Jesus teaching found at the end of the Gospel of Matthew: And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:18-20) [emphasis added]

If you believe that on the cross Jesus died for your sin, to reconcile you back to God, and that he died, burying your sins, and that he rose again to give you new life, then I would encourage you to get baptised.

In my Church we ask people three simple questions before we baptise them:

  1. Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God?
  2. Do you believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive your sin?
  3. Do you believe that he rose again to give you new life?

If you do not believe these things then I encourage you to consider them. If you do then I encourage you to get baptised!
