Ask a questionQ & A
Are Christians allowed to wear jewellery?
Thank you so much for your very intriguing question!
Biblically, references to jewellery and ornaments was for women only, as they were the only ones that would wear them. However, in our modern day context this could apply to anyone. Either way, the Bible gives a clear answer on the matter of jewellery.
It does not matter what kind of jewellery you wear. What matters is your heart, your attitude toward God.
Look at this Bible verse:
Do not let your adornment be merely outward — arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel — rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror. (1 Peter 3:3-6)
Outward adornment of the body with jewellery might be very pretty, but it means little, if anything, to God. We must remember that ornaments are for the purpose of specific human social interaction; they are man-made external objects. God, however, looks not on the outward appearance but on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).
In summary then, providing you are not using jewellery in an unrighteous way, you can wear whatever you like, whenever you like. There is nothing against Christians wearing jewellery, but as God looks at our heart, let us live lives that are beautiful from the heart.
