Ask a questionQ & A
I have moved back with my parents and now attend their church. I don't like it as I am used to more open worship. I feel I'm drifting away from God. What can I do?
Thank you for this honest question. You appear to be in a tricky situation but we pray that God will help you through your circumstances.
The bible tells us that we are to put God even above our own family. If you feel that conforming to another way is clearly disturbing your relationship with God perhaps you need to consider finding a different place to live and a different Church to attend. Are you able to attend a different Church without your family?
We are called to love our neighbours, friends, and family, but we are called to love God first.
Jesus commands us to "Honour your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbour as yourself" (Matthew 19:19)
Compare this with what Jesus also says:
"And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it" (Matthew 10:35-39)
These are challenging verses but we must find a balance between the two: we must honour our parents, but we must also put God first. I pray you will have wisdom to make the right decisions. I am sure that your family will understand if you want to attend a different style of church. I encourage you to speak to them about your faith and your question. I'm sure they too care about your faith in God and may therefore encourage you to attend where you feel comfortable.
I do hope this general answer to your question goes some way to helping you find peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. If you want to know more about what Jesus has done for you please watch the video on the main part of our site: www.lookingforGod.com
