Please explain Genesis 1 in the Bible

Thank you for your question about Genesis 1. I will seek to explain the passage simply and invite you to write back with any more specific questions you have.

Genesis is the first book of the Bible and the word means 'beginnings'. Genesis tells us that God created all natural things out of nothing and that everything that was made was good. Such is the power of God. It then goes on to say how he created man in his image but man chose to rebel against God and go his own way. However Genesis also reveals the start of God's plan to care for people and save them from their mistakes.

Genesis 1:1-2 show us that God existed in the Word, Spirit and God. This is the first glimpse we have of the Trinity. The three members of the Godhead existed perfectly in unity before anything else.

The basic outline of the chapter is as follows:

  • Genesis 1:3-5 - God creates light, day and night
  • Genesis 1:6-8 - God creates the heavens and waters
  • Genesis 1:9-10 - God creates the earth
  • Genesis 1:11-13 - God creates plants
  • Genesis 1:14-19 - God creates the sun and stars
  • Genesis 1:20-23 - God created the sea and air animals
  • Genesis 1:24-25 - God created the land animals
  • Genesis 1:26-30 - God created man and woman in his image and gives them rule over the earth and animals.

All of these things that God created were good. He made all things perfectly.

Sadly we see that man disobeyed God and turned from Him which brought sin into the world.

Eventually God would send his own Son, the Word of God, into the world to die in the place of sinful man so that man could be made right with God again. Through faith in Jesus we can be made right with God. Genesis is the start of God's redemption story.
