Question

I recently saw someone speak on the authority of the Bible but it has left me confused and disheartened. They spoke very negatively about the Bible. Is the Bible true?

Answer

Thank you for your interesting question on the authority of the bible.

The trouble is that the average person is not scholarly and can't see what may be wrong with one or another opinion. If an expert sounds certain we are tempted just to believe them. However, you should know that there are plenty of experts who are sure that the Bible is reliable and true. How can experts in the same field disagree so wildly? It is because of where they start when looking at the evidence.

There are indeed various problems, such as different accounts of the same event and different emphases from one biblical writer to another. If you don't think the Bible comes from God you will look for ways to exaggerate those things and declare the Bible unreliable. However, if you do think the Bible comes from God you will look for possible ways to explain these differences, and such ways do exist. That's why there are world-class scholars who are totally confident in the Bible. However, all of us can experience the power of God's Word, as I have myself.

The Bible teaches that faith in Jesus Christ is a gift given to us by God to answer the fact that we have sinned against Him. The Bible teaches that Jesus died to forgive us our sins and give us new life by the power Jesus received when he rose again from the dead. I had never even read the Bible when I first heard about that from a preacher one night, but the message of the Bible changed my life and now I believe the Bible because it is God's Word and has been shown to be true by God's power at work in me as it promises. It has also changed billions of other people's lives. If this message were not true, and Jesus has not been not raised from the dead, then it could not change lives but I can tell you - and millions of ordinary people like me can as well - that the Bible is totally true because God speaks through it still and it has a living power to change lives!

This Bible verse comes to mind:
Charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith (1 Timothy 1:3-5).

This was written thousands of years ago to the Church to warn them about people who will try and disprove the teachings of God. Thousands have come since then and tried to do the same thing but millions of people have also come to the same discovery as I have and have found a saving and joyful life of faith in the God who is described in the Bible.

For Christians it comes down to faith - not because we 'just believe' it but because God gives the gift of faith as a spiritual reality from outside us. We thus believe Jesus lived and died by faith. We believe the Bible is God's word by faith. We believe we are going to heaven by faith. We are saved by faith.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible...And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him (Hebrews 11:1-3,6)

I want to encourage you to discuss these feelings of doubt you have with your Church leader. There is a lot of solid evidence to prove that the Bible is historically accurate and believable.
