Question

What is it like being brainwashed? Why do Christians say daft words and "speak" in languages they don't know? They wouldn't speak like this in work. Who can translate these languages? Why do Christians always quote the bible when proving its authority? Can your God stop me sending emails like this to you?

Answer

Thank you for asking these questions. I hope you agree that I have taken the time to reply to you in love and with respect. If you have had a negative experience of the Church or from Christians in any way then I am sorry for this and hope you can see that Jesus does not want his followers to upset people.

Firstly I do not believe that I or any other genuine Christians have been brainwashed. There are around 2 billion Christians on the planet today. If we are all brainwashed then for what purpose? The Christian faith is about loving God, loving your neighbour, knowing peace and forgiveness, serving the poor, knowing we can go to a better place when we die, to name but a few. No one should be benefiting from this work in a negative or abusive way. Why would anyone want to brainwash people to do these good things?

The roots of the Christian faith date back around 4,000 years to before Abraham. This faith has been alive and well among billions of people for thousands of years. The truth of the message of Christianity is something that is life transforming and world shaping.

The message of Christianity is there is a God who loves us, but our wrong separates us from him, and that Jesus came to live a perfect life and die in our place for our sin.

When someone's life is changed by having a faith in Jesus, they are given the gift of the Holy Spirit as a promise of the new life to come in heaven. Some people then can speak in a new prayer language. Tongues is essentially a different word for languages. This means that when some Christians pray, they are speaking in a different language, be this an earthly or heavenly language. We have answered more about this in a previous answer here: http://lookingforgod.com/pdf/question/154

Some people also have the gift of interpretation of these tongues and share the prayer or message with the Church. I have experienced this happening and it is very powerful.

You are right to say that Christians wouldn't use certain words in a work environment as it says in the Bible that they are mainly used as a prayer language just for the believers and God. This is why you may only hear it spoken in a Church environment. It actually says that if an unbeliever like you is present, they will be confused! (1 Corinthians 14:23)

Regarding the authority of the Bible we have also written a longer answer which you can read here: http://lookingforgod.com/pdf/question/746

Essentially we believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and we should live by it as authoritative (2 Timothy 3:16). You may find it difficult to take when we quote bible verses to prove its authority but logic tells us it can be no other way - if the Bible is God's word and the highest authority in the world, then it can only be proved by itself; if some other thing could prove it then that other thing would automatically be a higher authority.
