Question

I am a young person who is a believer but I want my faith to be stronger. What can I do?

Answer

Thanks for your question about building more faith. I am very encouraged to hear that you want to grow closer to God!

There are a few simple things for you to consider, although the list below is not everything that you could do, we hope you find the following useful:

1). This Bible verse came to mind: Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12).

There is nothing wrong with being young, but make sure you are not immature. Christ was quite young when he started his ministry. Study the works of Jesus. See how he interacted with people and pray for his guidance to do the same.

Make sure your speech is honourable, that your conduct is appropriate and that you are pure and living in love and faith. These are only things that the Holy Spirit can help God's people do.

2). Ask someone, or a few people at your Church, to be a mentor for you; to pray with you, challenge you, speak into your life. More mature Christians have a great wealth of knowledge that we can draw from. These questions that you are asking on this website should be ones you are discussing in the context of a local Church. God has established his Church to serve his people. This is also a biblical lesson found in Titus 3, where the older are encouraged to teach the younger. Be willing to learn!

3). Get more involved in your local Church and be willing to serve.

Character comes through learning how to respond to different situations that life throws at us. It also comes from learning from the best characters. Study Jesus, Paul and Timothy. Look at how these men were responsible and godly. Keep praying and asking God to build you up.

4). Start to read the whole bible and bible commentaries. Also try and learn parts of the Bible.

5). Meet with other younger people and pray together about how God wants to use you in your mission to reach others.

6). Pray throughout the day and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you at all times

In summary, just because you are young does not mean that God cannot use you; in fact, he wants to! Speak to him through prayer, read the Bible daily and spend time with other Christians in a local Bible believing church.
