Question

I want to give myself to the Lord but I have sinned. How can I do this? I have stolen and had a few abortions. I need to give myself to the Lord.

Answer

Thank you for sharing your personal situation. It is clear that you feel guilt for your past and want to know forgiveness and freedom for new life. The Good News is that is exactly why Jesus came to earth!

Jesus left the perfect wonder of Heaven to live a life among us. He lived a perfect life without ever doing anything wrong.

Jesus came to die and He died for our wrong. On the cross Jesus took the punishment from God that we deserved for our sin. If we put our trust in Jesus' death, our sin dies too. If we put our trust in Jesus' resurrection, we get new life too! The Bible has many encouraging verses to describe this:

I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord", and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. (Psalms 32:5)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him". (John 3:16-17)

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:9-13)

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9)

No matter what you have done, if you turn from sin towards God, and ask for forgiveness through Christ, you can know God's love and comfort. You can go to be with God in the life to come. No sin is too bad; Jesus died for it all, He paid the price in full.

Jesus also promised to send the Holy Spirit into our lives so that we can live the way God intended. The Holy Spirit helps believers to follow Jesus every day and turn away from sin. The Holy Spirit also inspired the Word of God so we can read about God's direction for our lives.

We are also encouraged to pray to God and ask Him to lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Jesus was also tempted with sin, but he did not sin, so he can help us when we are tempted to sin.

In summary I hope you can see from the Bible that Jesus can forgive you and give you a new life. Run to him through the cross and empty grave; new life is in Christ.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
