Ask a questionQ & A
I suffer from short term memory loss and can't always remember what I have done. How can I ask for forgiveness of my sin if I can't remember? Can God still forgive me?
Thank you so much for your honest spiritual enquiry regarding the confession of sins.
The Bible teaches that God continues to forgive the sins of those who have once been forgiven through turning to Jesus Christ in repentance and faith. Genuinely repentant believers in Jesus are said to be justified by faith (Romans 5:1). 'Justified' is a word taken from the ancient Roman court system. It was the same verdict we now describe as 'not guilty'. It is not simply our past sins which God puts right in this way, but all our sins past, present and future. We can never fall from this state because God has placed us there. What can happen is that by sinning we can fall under God's fatherly displeasure, and lose the sense of His presence and favour toward us. However, if we confess to God our sins when we are conscious of them, He will restore our peace and joy.
You don't need to worry about sins you have forgotten. If you are in Christ, those sins are forgiven anyway, as are the many sins we don't even realise we commit. Most Christians will commit multiple sins each day, often without even realising it, and we are still forgiven by God through the work of Jesus. Our being right with God is not about confessing all of our various sins on a daily/hourly/minutely/monthly basis, but rather that God has chosen to punish Christ in our place for all of our sin, or he will punish the unbeliever for their sin in hell. You only need to be concerned if you have some particular sin that you know has become a barrier to fellowship with God. If there is a recurring sin in our lives we need special counsel, prayer and support to overcome it.
Here are some biblical passages about these issues:
Matthew 6:12; 1 John 1:7-9; 1 John 2:1-2; Luke 22:32; John 10:28; Hebrews 10:14; Psalm 89:31-33; Psalm 51:7-12; Psalm 32:5; Matthew 26:75; 1 Corinthians 11:30-32; Luke 1:20.
