Ask a questionQ & A
How can I cleanse myself of the most base and abhorrent desires which have found a place in me?
I am sorry to hear that you feel you have abhorrent desires inside you and they seem to be causing you distress. I hope this short answer will encourage you and give you hope that something can be done.
The truth is that all people struggle with internal problems like this. If they acknowledge it as abhorrent is a different matter. Some people may feel it is okay to murder or have desires to do so, for example, but others may feel it is horrible to desire such things, but they still desire them.
All people have these issues because of our sinful nature. The bible tells us that people who have trusted Christ are able to have a new heart.
And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord God (Ezekiel 11:19-21)
This is described further in the Bible:
So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits (Matthew 7:17-18).
The hard news is that there is nothing you can do to change your own heart; only God can do this work in you. We are told to trust in Jesus' life, death and resurrection for new life. If we trust Jesus died for us, our old ways died in his place. We are free to live a new life for him.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:17-19)
