Ask a questionQ & A
I have backslidden and I want to get closer to God again.
Thank you for sharing your personal situation and asking for advice. It is good to hear that you have identified something you would like to change and have asked for help.
The Good News is that we can always turn back to God. God calls us to 'repent' which literally means to do a 180 degree turn in the opposite direction and back to God.
No matter what you have done the good news (or Gospel) is that Jesus will forgive anyone who calls on his name.
"Yet even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments." Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love (Joel 2:12-13).
The Bible tells us that God's love and mercy is new every morning. If our trust in is Christ then God has chosen to forget all of our sin and has removed it as far as the east is from the west.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him" (Lamentations 3:22-24)
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:8-12)
The reason that God can forgive us like this is that faith in Jesus' death and resurrection brings the forgiveness of our sin, because God punished Christ in our place for our sin. This means we can always find forgiveness and mercy and love from God. We can turn back to him at any moment.
The remedy is the same for renewing our faith as for turning to Christ for salvation. If you have in the past prayed for forgiveness yet have backslidden, you can and you must turn back again. If you are not sure if you have ever truly asked God to forgive you through Christ then today can be the first time. We all need to turn back to God in some way every day.
