Question

How do I find a Christian counsellor?

Answer

Thank you for this question about how to find a Christian counsellor.

I recommend the best thing to do is contact your local Church and speak to the leaders there about if they know of any local Christian counsellors. Most churches will know of trained Christian counsellors in their area who can help you.

Alternatively the church leaders themselves may be able to help counsel you. The term used in the Bible for Church leaders is shepherd, pastor, overseer. All of these terms are used to describe Church leaders. Their role is to lead people closer to God, pray for people, and teach people God's word so they can face all the issues life throws at them.

It says that Church leaders are to: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. (1 Peter 5:2-3)

The Church is meant to be a community where God's people love one another, support and encourage people in the community. You may be able to become part of a small group of people who meet regularly and share issues and pray for each other.

God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, (2 Corinthians 7:6)

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:1-2)

Secondly I want to encourage you to pray to God the Father. If you have faith in God through Jesus Christ he has promised to send the Holy Spirit who will comfort you and guide you through life.

But I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I depart, I will send Him to you. (John 16:7 NKJV)

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17)

In summary, I encourage you to speak to the leaders in your church who may be able to help you directly or know of someone who can help you. There are a number of Christian counselling agencies throughout the UK who may be able to help you personally. However, I encourage you to pray to God for his peace and comfort to be known in your life.

Here are some more Bible Verses for your further consideration:

  • 1 Peter 5:2-3
  • Galatians 6:1-2
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
