Ask a questionQ & A
When I was younger I believed in God. I felt him in my heart. How can I find him again and that feeling?
Thank you for this amazing question about how to find God again. It is very encouraging to have people ask questions like this! This is why the website exists.
The whole of the Bible could be summed up as a story about God and his people. God loves his people and wants to be close to them.
The main reason we lose our awareness of God is when we turn away from God to other things that the world has to offer. People can replace God with anything else! From food, sex, money, fame, sport, games, family, work etc. God is often put second place in people's lives. If this is why you lost touch with God you must repent before God, rededicate your life to Him as if only today you are becoming a Christian.
A second reason we may lose our awareness of God is that some doubt arises in our minds about the essential truth of the Christian faith, such as the goodness of God when things go wrong, or the reliability of the Bible. We may begin with an honest question, and that is a good thing provided we look for the answer IN God's presence, which means to keep worshipping and praying and trusting HIM - even if we are doubting the explanation of Him we thought was true.
The Bible says, now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen...without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. (Hebrews 11:1, 6).
Even the most committed Christians sometimes have questions because God does not promise to explain everything to us. The wrong kind of doubt begins when we tell God He MUST explain Himself to us. God's way is to give Himself, not all the answers.
We are required to have faith. Even human faith is real when we must place our trust in something without all the evidence. We can see this with flying a plane. You don't know everything about flight, or about aircraft, or even about the pilot. You trust that there is sufficient reason to get on board without it being explained to you. On a higher level, this is true of God. He is trustworthy even when he does not explain Himself. If your doubt led you away from God, do what Jesus said here, "Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
The third reason we may lose our childhood awareness of God is that we didn't respond to Him by a definite surrender of our lives. God often gives children an awareness of His presence, so that we will progress from that to a living relationship with Him. That means facing some hard truths about ourselves. Jesus said: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" (Matthew 22:37) The reality is that none of us does this because we choose things of which God disapproves, sometimes without realising it, other times even when we know they are wrong.
Sadly the wrong we have done separates us from God. Our sin is what stops us from feeling God's love. He is perfect and Holy and our sin separates us from Him.
Thankfully God sent his own Son Jesus Christ to come and live the perfect life that we cannot. When Jesus was killed on the cross he died in our place to take the punishment for our sins. Jesus rose again to new life so we can be forgiven by God and inherit eternal life with God.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life". (John 3:16)
The Bible says that we need to put our trust in what Jesus has done so that we can experience God's love again. It says then we have a new heart to experience the love of God.
"And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh" (Ezekiel 11:19)
To feel the love of God in your heart I want to encourage you to turn away from whatever you are aware of that is against Him in your life, and put your trust in Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. Ask God to forgive you through the work of Christ and start living for him. It is also important then to be open about your commitment. The way Jesus taught for this is to be baptised and belong to a local church that believes the Bible and honours Christ as God's eternal Son and our Saviour. It would be good to speak to a Christian leader or another trusted church individual regarding your question. I know they would be delighted to further answer you as well as offer prayer and support as you continue your spiritual journey: Find a Church
