Question

How do I know if I'm being led by the Spirit in my life?

Answer

Thank you for asking this honest question. I am so glad that you want to walk in God's Spirit and live for Him.

As with every blessing that God gives to His children, the answer to this question centres around the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He died for us so that we could receive salvation.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. (1 Timothy 3:18).

Although we are sinners and deserve no help from God, Jesus Christ died on the cross to take our punishment and enable us to return to God.

I wonder have you ever asked God to forgive your sins and trusted in Jesus as your only hope of heaven, as your Saviour and Lord? If not, there is a prayer on this website that you can use to make your commitment to Him.

He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit, Paul goes on to tell us in 1 Timothy 3:18. The Holy Spirit's power raised Jesus from the dead.

Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,  made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5)

The same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead also made us alive in Christ. Not only that, but God gave us complete salvation, which includes not only forgiveness but power to live for Him now and the certainty that when our bodies die, we will live forever in Heaven. He did this by giving us the Holy Spirit to live within us. That is why we say that we have been 'born again' - every believer has the Holy Spirit living inside him or her, giving us the life and power of God Himself. If you believe and trust in Christ, you are born again and have the Holy Spirit within you.

Paul told the Ephesian church,

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 1:18-20).

It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to live in all that Christ has given us, so it is very important to live by the Holy Spirit's power and not just our own efforts. The Bible says that our fallen human nature (sometimes called 'the flesh' in the New Testament) is opposed to God. We need His power in order to change.

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)

So how can we keep in touch with the Holy Spirit and live by His power? Obviously, we can't live by the Spirit if we have never received Him, so make sure you really are a born again Christian. After that, there are two central keys to walking in the Spirit. They are faith and the Word of God.

Every day, affirm your faith in God and ask the Holy Spirit to fill and lead you. Trust Him to do so. Don't keep looking inside yourself to see if you feel spiritual, trust God to answer your prayer.

Secondly, every day read, think about and remember God's Word, the Bible. Ask God to speak to you through it. As you do so, He will bring His Word to life in your heart by the Holy Spirit and you will find yourself walking in the Spirit.

As you practise this discipline, day by day, you will discover that you are changing and growing as a Christian, because the Holy Spirit will be able to apply to your life all that Jesus accomplished on the cross.

Thirdly, make sure you get teaching and fellowship in church. This will certainly help and encourage you to walk in the Spirit.

To sum up, you can live by the Spirit if you ensure that you have been born again and that you live by faith and the Word of God. This is a wonderful and blessed way of life, full of peace and joy, even when you have many problems.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)
