Ask a questionQ & A
I am trying to figure out life. I commit the same sin and am concerned by events around the world, such as Ebola and ISIS.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and situation. I hope this email reply will encourage you.
Firstly you mention the problem of falling into the same sin. You have not mentioned what that sin specifically is, but whatever it is there are ways to find help. Firstly recommit your life to Christ now and each time you sin. Jesus taught us to daily pray: "Our Father in heaven...give us this day our daily bread and forgive us..." (Matthew 6:9,11-12)
The truth is not one day has gone by since I first heard about Christ that I have not done something wrong. God does not begin a good work in us and then let us go. He is the one who saves us and he promises to always be with us.
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you (2 Corinthians 13:5)
However, if there is no evident change in our life then we need to examine ourselves and test if the Holy Spirit is at work in us. This is a lifelong battle as we strive to get closer to Jesus; we are in a spiritual war. It is the enemy who wants to rip you away from Jesus.
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God (James 1:2-5)
Practically speaking I want to encourage you to do a few things:
- Identify the cause of the sin and kill it (for example if it is an addiction to something, find a way to cut that out of your life).
- Do not do it alone. Find someone in a local Christian Church who you can talk to and ask them to keep you accountable.
- Pray, pray, pray! We need God to change us and help us to become more like Jesus.
- Please feel free to write back to us with the specific issue you struggle with so we can speak more clearly into the situation.
- If you do not want to do that I am sure there is likely a Christian book written on the subject that may be able to give you more advice.
- Ask others to pray for and with you.
- Read the scriptures that address this issue and think about them when you are tempted to sin.
The end of this life as we know it may come at any time. Jesus said no one knows when it will happen but we have to be ready. This does not mean that we should live in a state of constant panic and fear, but we can know that if we trust in Jesus' life, death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins, that we will go and be with him when we pass into the next life.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6)
Jesus' own words are the basis for this firm and certain hope. Can the enemy possibly rip you away from Jesus?
"I give eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand." (John 10:28-29)
On the things happening around the world, Jesus said things similar to Ebola and wars like ISIS would take place:
"And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains" (Matthew 24:5-8)
Do not let these things scare or worry you, but cling to Christ and trust in him through them all. He is Lord over all things. He has won the battle. Live a life for him!
In summary, regarding sin, there are a number of things you can do and we encourage you to ask God for forgiveness. Further to this, the Bible tells us that trouble will be throughout the world. Even during the darkest times on earth, Jesus is still greater than all and we can place our trust in Him.
