As I give my life to God, how will I know if I have the Holy Spirit in my life?

Thank you so much for your honest spiritual enquiry. This is a good question to which we must understand what the Bible says correctly. Firstly we’ll look at the Holy Spirit’s role when someone becomes a Christian and then secondly what evidence we should see of the Holy Spirit’s work during the Christian life.

Before a person becomes a Christian they will experience the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit convicts the person of sin and their need for Jesus (John 16:8). John 3 speaks about the fact that no one can become a Christian unless they are born of the Spirit; this means that the Holy Spirit has to give them Spiritual life.

Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'" (John 3:5-7)

A Christian is only someone who has been made spiritually alive by the Holy Spirit. This isn’t a visible action, but the visible action is the person’s faith in Jesus.

When a person puts their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins they are united to Christ spiritually by the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:17 and 1 Corinthians 12:13 both speak about the church and therefore the Christian being united with Christ.

The Bible also talks about all Christians together being the temple of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 2 describes what God is doing as he builds the church; he uses the metaphor of a building and says that the church and therefore Christians are being built into the temple where God dwells by his Spirit:

For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18-22).

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:13).

This verse tells us that the Holy Spirit which is given to the Christian is like a deposit and confirmation that they are a Christian, so that when they die or Jesus returns the Christian will take possession of eternal life with God.

The second way a Christian can know they have the Holy Spirit is by the fruit He will produce within the Christian’s life. The Holy Spirit continues to convict the Christian of sin so that they can repent and become more like Christ. Often new Christians say that they feel that they are a worse person after they become a Christian than they were before they became a Christian; this is okay because it is a sign that the Holy Spirit is working in their life and showing them sin that they didn’t know was there.

Romans 8 tells us that the life of a Christian is one led by the Spirit. The Christian lives by the Spirit and not by the flesh, meaning no longer living in the strength of their own human frailty. Read Romans 8:1-17.

The fruit of the Spirit are listed in Galatians 5:22-23. The Spirit produces these in the Christian. The Holy Spirit also helps the Christian understand the Bible and learn how it applies to the Christian.

In summary, a Christian knows they have the Holy Spirit in them because it is the Holy Spirit that convicts them of their need for Christ and brings them to him in the first place. The person responds to this work by faith. Secondly the evidence a Christian has the Holy Spirit is that He continues to work within the person showing sin, producing godliness, helping the person understand the Bible and giving the Christian Godly desires and priorities.
