Question

If God is real then how come no one has seen him?

Answer

Thank you for your question about seeing God.

The Bible teaches us that no one can see God because He is a Spirit, and hence not visible to the human eye. However, we also discover from the bible that God could make himself visible..."But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live" (Exodus 33:20). This is because God is so Holy and powerful that if we saw Him we would die in his perfect presence; if you ask to see God then you are asking to die!

Yet we can see God at work in different ways. Firstly in the creation; us and the world around us are wonderfully made by a creator God.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. (Romans 1:20)

The Good News is that Jesus came in human form to show us God and the way back to God. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, ;being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8)

We also see God act through the sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God, and he made a way for us to be right with God again; He died in our place to forgive us our sins. This makes us perfect in the sight of God and if we trust in him, we can go to be with God when we die.

Jesus also taught us that we will all see God one day. Those who have been forgiven by Jesus will go to be with God and those who have not been forgiven will go to hell which is where God is not present, but his perfect wrath and punishment is.

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations" (Matthew 25:31-32) (I encourage you to read the rest of this passage).

We can also see God at work in changed lives. There are billions of people alive today who have known their lives change because of what God has done for them through Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit.

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18)

In summary, God is spirit and therefore invisible to us, but we are able to see him through the beauty of creation, through our lives when we submit to him, and we will all see God as our perfect judge when we die. It is our hope that you will realise your need of Jesus, repent of your sin and submit your life to him, and that you will see God; that is, see him working in your life through the power of the Holy Spirit.
