Ask a questionQ & A
I was raised without religion but now have frequent feelings of needing to explore Christianity. I don't know what to do or who to talk to. I am confused and lost.
I am so glad you contacted us with your wonderful question! I say that it is wonderful because it shows that God Himself is speaking to your heart. The spiritual hunger that you have is precious!
We live in a world that was created by God and so it is obvious that we can never find the meaning of life until we find Him. Many people live as though the pleasure of this world can bring us real peace and satisfaction, but – as you may have realised – they can’t. We need a spiritual dimension to our lives.
You say that you feel lost; this is another great truth that you have learnt! We humans really are lost without God, in more than one sense. We are lost in that we can’t find direction or meaning. We are also ‘lost’ in that we are sinners who deserve to be punished by God and we need to be saved from punishment through His love and kindness. That is why His Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross. He bore our punishment so that we can be free.
There is a story in the Bible that explains this. Jesus said,
So he told them this parable: "What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbours, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance" (Luke 15:4-7).
You are like that lost sheep. God is looking for you and will be overjoyed when He can bring you home to Himself.
If we believe in Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, we can have peace with God and we will receive His many gifts – forgiveness, the gift of His presence in our lives through the Holy Spirit and the gift of eternal life.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
This – making peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ – is the most important step in experiencing God’s love and help throughout life.
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love. (2 John 1:3)
There is much more to be said about all this and I hope that you will get in touch with a local Christian and continue to discuss these things. In the meantime, I wonder whether you have a Bible and could start reading the Gospel of John in the New Testament?
