Questions & answers    SALVATION    Faith & Hope

I am not worthy of Jesus. I am a sinner and have no hope. Jesus has abandoned me; I have never experienced him. Besides, how can you have faith? Open your eyes, we are all surrounded by greed, corruption, liars and hypocrites. I believe in what I experience.

Thank you for your honest spiritual enquiry. This is an important question and it is clearly very important and personal to you. I shall try to give you some Bible verses to think about and some ideas which will point you in the right direction. It would also be very helpful for you to talk to a Christian in a local church who can listen further to your concerns and better guide you through what the Word of God says.

I want to answer your question in three parts. Firstly deal with the feeling of failure and unworthiness and how they link to faith. Secondly write about whether Jesus abandons those who are Christians and thirdly how Christians can experience God in their day to day lives.

Firstly, the feeling of failure and unworthiness can often be the experience of many Christians as they walk through life. We do indeed live in a fallen and sinful and therefore greedy, corrupt and hypocritical world and are faced with these realities by the lives of those around us as well as in our own lives. The experience of sinfulness of the world is evidence of what the Bible teaches about the fallenness of humanity. Romans 1-3 highlight this for us as we learn for example that,

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… (Romans 3:23)

There isn’t anyone good enough or worthy enough to come to God as they are. There is also nothing anyone can do to win God’s favour either. Good works do nothing to appease God’s righteous anger towards all people who have disobeyed him, we are all spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1-3).

A Christian is someone who has been made spiritually alive in Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit through faith in Christ. Jesus, through his death on the cross, has paid the price for sin and made the way open for all to come to God freely by his grace shown at the cross. There is nothing special about a Christian other than they have been taken from spiritual darkness and being enemies of God to spiritual light and friendship with God.

A person’s faith is in Christ’s work and what has already accomplished for us at the cross. A Christian trusts in this work as it is good and efficient enough for us. Romans 3 goes on to say this,

[We] are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. (Romans 3:24-25)

Secondly, when a person is in Christ they are united to him by the Holy Spirit. God has made them a new creation in Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 5:17). They are made right with God and free from the punishment of sin. They are however not free, yet, from the power and presence of sin and the Christian lives in a battle with it day by day.

However, God has given Christians his Holy Spirit to help them live for God and please him in what they do. Romans 8 describes how those who are led through life by the Spirit are able to overcome their sin and I encourage you to read it.

Of course Christians still sin but there is hope and forgiveness and God does not abandon us but helps us and encourages us to rid sin from our lives.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9).

Hebrews 13 has a great truth too. “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

God gives us his Holy Spirit, his Word, prayer and fellow Christians to help us live in a world full of temptations. We will fail sometimes and we must confess this sin but we know that God is faithful to forgive.

Thirdly and finally, Christians experience God every day in different ways. Their faith is in what the Bible teaches and the historical accounts of Jesus Christ. The Christian’s faith is strengthened as they see God’s Word proved in their lives as they live for him. The Bible was inspired by God and what it teaches is true and we can trust it to show and teach us about God, his world and how he wants us to live for him.

The Holy Spirit speaks to us through his Word and testifies to its truth in our hearts and our experiences. We experience God through prayer as well. Being able to talk to God is an amazing gift that he has given to us. He is open and willing and available and ready to hear from us and to speak to us and help us and meet our needs. We can approach him and experience him whenever we want.

In summary, you can only come to God in faith through his son Jesus Christ who died on the cross to take away sin, rose from the dead to give new life and is sat at God’s right hand in Heaven now interceding for us. God sustains our faith each day by his grace, through his Word and Spirit. He helps us overcome sin and live for him. By learning from his Word and through regular prayer a person can really know how to experience in their lives.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10).
