Question

A family member has died suddenly. I'm still trying to come to terms with it. Why did they die, could God have saved them?

Answer

Thank you for sharing your situation. I am so sorry to hear about the passing away of your family member. Death is unnatural, devastating and so very hard to cope with.

Jesus once was asked to go and help heal someone who was dying. On the way there Jesus had the news that the person died, and so he wept. John 11 tells us the story, very similar to your question: Jesus wept. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?"

Jesus did go on to heal and resurrect the man that had died. But he still wept. This shows the death is something to be mourned and upset about. Even though Jesus knew he was going to heal Lazarus he still wept. Jesus hated death, and as God incarnate have suffered death Himself, He is able to understand and support us in our grief. But we also need to look at our own life, and its relationship to God.

The sad news is that each one of us will indeed die one day. God teaches us that because we have all sinned then we will all die. Romans 3:23 says that for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and it goes on to say in Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

The Good News is that we can know ETERNAL LIFE through Jesus Christ. The reason Jesus healed Lazarus from death that time is to show that we can know everlasting life through Jesus Christ. He holds the keys to death. Jesus died himself to defeat death. We need to pass on from this life due to our sin, but in the next life we can live forever. Jesus did not sin, he lived a perfect life, but on the cross he died to take the punishment for our sin.

The way to know eternal life is through Jesus Christ. By faith we must believe that Jesus died for our sins on the cross and rose again to conquer death. Jesus spoke to Lazarus's sister before He raised her dead brother:

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world". (John 11:25-27).

This span of life on earth, how ever long we live for, is small compared to ETERNITY with God. Therefore can I encourage you to find peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Again I am so sorry to hear about your family member passing on to the next life, but I want to encourage you that through Jesus we can know eternal life.
