Ask a questionQ & A
Plants were made first, then the sun. How did the plants survive without sunlight?
Thank you for your very interesting question about creation.
You are correct in identifying that trees, flowers and other flora were created before the sun, moon and stars. As we read:
And God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth." And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so...And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. (Genesis 1:11-15,18-19)
However, even though the sun, moon and stars were not created until the fourth day, there was still light, because on the first day God said, "Let there be light", and there was light (Genesis 1:3).
However, where did this light come from, if there were no stars? It came from God himself. At the end of the Bible, we see a description of the heavenly city: the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb (Revelation 21:23). Heaven does not need a sun because the glory of the Lord shines and fills it with light.
Also, even if there was no light at all until the third day, plants are able to survive for more than one day without any sunlight. The plants would not have died over 24 hours, and would then continue to grow after the light appeared.
Although not in terms of light, the glory of the Lord continues to fill the earth today. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made (Romans 1:20).
Also, for those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, God, through His Holy Spirit, is living in them (Ephesians 1:13-14). This same glory that fills heaven with light and was present at the start of creation is living within every follower of Jesus.
Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? As a result of our sins, we are separated from God. Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth and lived a perfect life, showing us how to live. He died on a cross, taking the punishment for our sins and rose from the dead to show his power over death. By asking God for forgiveness and turning our back on our sins, we have a restored relationship with God.
In summary, the flora of the earth was created on the third day, with the sun, moon and stars created on the fourth day. However, light itself was created on the first day, and also existed in the form of God himself before this form was created. The glory of God shines like a light, and heaven is full of light because of God's glory. The earth was filled with light because of the glory of God, even before the fourth day. This glory goes on to live in the lives of each person that is a follower of Jesus. Also if a plant does not see light for one day, it will not die!
