Why did God not create humans and angels to be equal to him?

Thank you for your question about God's perfection and why we are not created equal to him.

Let us assume, for a moment, that we could be equal with God. There is a problem here which goes to our differences between us and God. God has always existed and will continue to exist. If, as created beings, we were to share equality with him, we would in fact not be equal in all things, as we have not always existed as God has.

It is clear then, even from this simple thought, that God is so much greater and powerful than we initially realise. Indeed, as God himself says: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD" (Isaiah 55:8). Our thoughts lead to sin, our ways lead to destruction.

We cannot be equal with God because we have very different ways of operating, even though we are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27).

Throughout the world, the highest value is love. Our society craves love, the media create drama and art on love and in our relationships love is seen as the most important aspect shared between two people. Even the Bible talks a lot about love with 1 Corinthians 13, a chapter about love, being read regularly at weddings.

However, with love comes freedom. We are free to choose whom we love and what we love. It is clear throughout the world that people feel a sense of jealousy when something or someone takes priority over another. No one is able to force someone to love them and if they could, what sort of love is that in reality?

In the same way, God has created us with the ability to love. Just as God can love, we can love too. However, love requires freedom. When Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis 3, they willingly chose to do something that God had told them not to. As a result of this action, they were removed from the Garden of Eden and our relationship with God has never been the same since.

Before they sinned, Adam and Eve had equality with God in the sense that they would meet with him daily and know his presence. However with sin coming into the world, their position with God was lost because of the stain of sin, which was a willing choice that was made. We continue to live in that choice everyday that we live in sin rather than declaring our love for God.

However, the bible tells us that God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). In Philippians 2 we read about Jesus, the eternal Son of God, making a way for our sin to be dealt with once and for all. Though Jesus was (and is) equal with God the Father, he decided to humble himself, coming to earth, living the life of a human and then dying on a cross for our sins. He paid the price of our sin and rose to life from the dead to show his authority over the grave. By placing our trust in him, we can have eternal life.

Even though we are nothing like God, when we come to Jesus we become his. His Father becomes our Father, His life becomes our life and His inheritance becomes our inheritance. We do not become God (or a god) and yet we can have what God has by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.

Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? If not, I encourage you to pray to God and ask for the forgiveness of your sin. By doing this, you will know the presence of God in your life and be with him when you die.

In summary, while it is true we are not equal with God, as created beings this is simply not possible anyway. God has always existed and we have not. Throughout the world we see love as the highest value attainable because it is a reflection of God's character. Jesus has made a way for us to be with God; that his Father, life and inheritance can be ours, just as it is His.
