Why did God create humans when he knew we would mess up?

Thank you for your question. The simple answer is that God knew that humans would sin when He created them, and that permitting this to happen would lead to an amazing story of His great redeeming love through what Jesus did on the cross. But that answer leaves many stones unturned – many questions about His character and plan.

What could God possibly need from us? Why did He create us? King David asked a similar question: what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:4) Paul declared of God that "nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything" (Acts 17:25). This clearly shows that whilst we need God, He doesn’t need us. Neither does He need heaven or angels, since He is entirely self-sufficient. Even the supernatural places and beings are the creation of God for He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).

So, what about sin? The reality is that sin seems so destructive and painful that we cannot comprehend why God would allow it. Like with so many questions, we won’t know fully until we leave our imperfections and enter His heavenly kingdom (1 Corinthians 13:12). I read an illustration in which a man describes his father. He said that his father had beaten him, left his mom, and once killed a defenceless animal with his bare hands. You wouldn’t be wrong to conclude that his dad was a cruel and selfish man. However, what if he said that his father physically corrected him when he stole or lied; that his father often had to leave his mom for business trips to financially support the family; and that once he found a dying animal in pain, and put it out of its misery. The picture presented now with the missing information is of a caring and loving man.

The information we do have is that God created humans for the same reason He created all other things: to bring Him glory. In a special and unique way, humans would share His life and know Him, bringing glory to Him through their words (see Psalm 8) and loving Him willingly from their hearts (Matthew 22:37). This willingness to do right comes from our freedom of choice which evidently ended in the choice to do wrong since the fall (Genesis 3). This leads us to the cross and to the forgiveness and redemption through Christ.

Peter talks about the grace that came through the gospel of Jesus and says that even angels long to look into these things (1 Peter 1:12). Think of how much greater our love for someone is when they forgive our ugly sin and selfishness. God was no less loving and merciful before the cross or the fall, but our understanding of these characteristics is now painted in glorious colour.

In summary, this is a question I could never hope this to fully answer. I encourage you to bring your questions to God our Father as Job did. God did not reproach him for bringing hundreds of questions and complaints, but instead responded by underlining how much higher His ways were than Job’s. Perhaps God will satisfy your questions as you study the Bible and wrestle in prayer, or perhaps in the midst of doubts and suffering you will simply hold fast to Christ your Redeemer and say as Job did:

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me! (Job 19:25-27)
