Ask a questionQ & A
I have recently had a heart break and everyone in my church said me that I should be able to forgive and forget her.
Thank you for sharing your situation and asking for help. I am so sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience that you describe as 'heartbreak'.
God knows your issues and in some ways knows what you are experiencing. God never had a literal relationship with another woman/person but he does describe his relationship with the Church as a marriage.
In the book of Hosea the prophet is told to take a wife who has committed adultery as a sign of how God's people have turned against him for other God's. God knows the pain it is to experience being rejected or cheated on; draw near to God and he will comfort you.
The Good News is that God does forgive the people who have turned away from Him. He loves them even though they have cheated on him. God is forgiving, and has forgiven his people and so we should in turn try and forgive those who have done wrong against us. Part of the Lord's prayer says:
And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us (Luke 11:4).
This is not an easy process. In fact it is so difficult that it cost Jesus his life to forgive us. However we must attempt to seek to forgive. The counsel your Church friends have given you is correct. What are the other options? To hate and not forgive? No, we must pray for help from God to forgive as he has forgiven us. Otherwise we will become bitter and never move on.
I pray that God will draw near to you and comfort you through this difficult time.
