Ask a questionQ & A
I followed my parent's advice and have done a degree but it's not in the subject I want. I feel I'm on the wrong path. Why did God put me in this situation?
Thank you for sharing your testimony. The question of God's will and our freedom of choice is an important one.
Firstly I would like to challenge your view that God has put you in this situation. You have told me that you followed your parents advice, not God's advice. It isn't right, then, to blame God now for what happened. After all, God did not command you to attend any course!
Secondly, if you are inwardly convinced that the right way forward is for you to study another subject, you might consider doing a masters degree in that given subject. Increasingly now, people need to progress to postgraduate qualifications for a career and it might well be possible to make such a change. This could open up other doors for you.
My third comment is to encourage you to take charge of your decisions rather than submitting to, or relying on, other people. As adults we must, of course, honour our parents but we do not have to continue obeying them. We are free to make life decisions like this as we see fit.
My final comment is that we need to keep in perspective the idea that happiness comes from fulfilling our dreams or hopes. The reality is that it comes from doing God's will from day to day wherever we are. Only a generation ago, our parents had very little choice what job they might be given yet many found contentment in life through other means, and supremely those who found it in their faith. In that light, I wonder if God wants you on your current course in order to reach people in that world? Christians should base their lives on Jesus' command to go into the world and make disciples.
Do remember in all this that God loves you and cares for you. He wants you to know him personally through Jesus Christ. He sent his own Son to die for you and give you eternal life. That is the most important aspect of believing in God and wanting to know His will.
I do hope this general answer to your question goes some way to helping you find peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. If you want to know more about what Jesus has done for you please watch the video on the main part of our site: www.lookingforGod.com
