Ask a questionQ & A
I am someone who has carried out many abortions and now been married for years without a child. Will God forgive me and bless me with a child?
Thank you for asking such a personal question about abortion and pregnancy. I will try and answer your question about God from the Bible which we believe is God's word to us.
Firstly it is important to note that God is not judging you while you are on earth for any previous things you have done wrong. God has said that the judgement will come when we stand before his throne when Jesus returns. The word of God says: I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom. (2 Timothy 4:1)
However those people who have been forgiven by God will not face any punishment for their sin or wrongdoing on judgement day. Jesus died to forgive us for our sin and make a way for us to know God:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God" (John 3:16-18).
Therefore it is first important to ask if you are made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ? If you are not then I encourage you to repent and turn from your sin to God through Jesus Christ death and resurrection for new life.
Secondly it is important to note that having an abortion is seen as a sinful act in God's word. Just like all sin, you can be forgiven for it if you ask for forgiveness. Jesus' followers wrote: "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:8-9)
I want to also encourage you to find help and counsel regarding your previous abortions. There are many Christian centres around the UK and the World who run specialised courses designed to walk women who have undergone an abortion through a journey of healing, and I strongly encourage you to seek this help. The loss of a child through an abortion is still the loss of a child, and there is often a grieving process to go through.
So we have established that God is not punishing you on earth for having abortions by not giving you a child. Consider these statements:
- Some people who have never had any abortions are not able to have children
- Some people who have many abortions go on to have many children
- Some people who do not even know or care about God have children
- Some people who do know and love God cannot have children
Jesus said that certain things in life are random and they can happen to anyone. "For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:45) God is not punishing you now for having abortions in the same way that he is not punishing people now for any past sin.
It is possible that you are unable to have children for purely medical reasons. Often the male or female in a relationship can have issues with their reproductive systems, or both can. We live in a world where sickness and infertility are abounding due to the fallen world in which we live. You may have once been able to conceive, but as you have grown older and undergone abortions you may have lost the ability to conceive. It could be your husband may not have a strong sperm production. There are many different complex reasons that can occur. We advise that you seek medical help on these issues. The medical professional may be able to advise some ethical ways for you to become pregnant using different treatments.
If treatment doesn’t work, I want to encourage you to consider adopting or foster caring. You could even do this as a different option. There are many thousands of children who do not have parents in the UK and millions across the world who are in need of a loving family. Jesus was adopted by Joseph and Christians are spiritually adopted into God's family when we know his forgiveness through Christ. It says in the Bible that our true religion is looking after orphans. I understand the desire to have your own children is strong and good. However if you are unable to have children due to medical reasons then you may consider adoption.
Jesus said: "I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you." (John 14:18)
In summary, God is not judging you now and you can be forgiven from the past and have a new life in God. You may or may not be blessed with a biological child but you may pursue adoption if you are able. In all circumstances, pray to God, that you may know his guidance through your life.
