Ask a questionQ & A
Does God allow us to try and make contact with the dead?
Thank you for your very serious question.
The Holy Bible expressly forbids any attempt at contacting ‘the departed’. Divination, necromancy, the interrogation of the dead by any means, whether through séances, mediums, witchcraft, mesmerism, spiritism, channelling or any other forms, is expressly warned against.
Attempted contact with the dead for any purpose, be it the consolidation of the past, the comfort of the present or the confirmation of the future, is expressly forbidden. Let me be clear; no church of Jesus Christ would ever be involved in anything like this, and anything like this has NOTHING to do with the true church of Jesus Christ.
You will notice in my first paragraph that I use the phrase ‘attempt to contact the dead’. I do this because there is no real evidence in the Scriptures that this is actually possible. Even the 'witch of Endor' got quite a shock when her conjuring brought up the real Samuel, come to tell Saul of his sin and upcoming death (1 Samuel 28).
Such attempts at contacting the dead lead to the rise of deceivers using tricks and ventriloquism and various old and new information gathering techniques to mislead often vulnerable and desperate people. More than that though, such necromancy opens up both the practitioners and enquirers into the connection and deception of the demonic, and to every lying and misleading spirit that walks the earth. This, of course, may eventually lead to spiritual disaster. Any attempt to contact the dead is a NO GO AREA!
"When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord" (Deuteronomy 18:9-12)
