Question

How can I stop spiritual attacks while I grow closer to Christ?

Answer

Thank you for your question. I am sorry to hear that you believe you are under spiritual attack, but also I am encouraged that you want to grow closer to Christ.

We do have a spiritual enemy that wants to stop us growing closer to Christ. The most common metaphor for Christians in the Bible is that of a soldier; we are in a spiritual battle. Paul writes:

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12).

His answer for this battle is to:

Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:10-11).

Paul goes on to tell us about the armour of God:

Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak (Ephesians 6:10-20)

The sad news is that we cannot leave the battle, but we can be prepared for it.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion for ever and ever. Amen (1 Peter 5:8-11)

The good news is that Jesus wins! And if we trust in his death and resurrection we can win with him and stand against the devil! I will pray for you.

In summary, as soldiers of Christ we are placed in a spiritual battle, but the victory has already been won in Christ Jesus. Remember to wear the armour of God every day, remembering about your faith, salvation, the gospel, the truth in which you stand, your righteousness in Christ and the sword of the Spirit - God's word - which helps you daily in life.
