Question

What is the Holy Spirit?

Answer

Thank you for your question about the Holy Spirit.

The first thing to know is that it is not what is the Holy Spirit, but who, as the Holy Spirit is an active and living person. The bible tells us so much of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit was present and active in the creation of the world:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2) [emphasis added]

The Holy Spirit is vital in our salvation:

Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psalms 51:9-12) [emphasis added]

The Holy Spirit gives people rest:

The Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. So you led your people, to make for yourself a glorious name. (Isaiah 63:10-14) [emphasis added]

The Holy Spirit was active in Jesus virgin conception:

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:18-21) [emphasis added]

The Holy Spirit was active in Jesus baptism:

Now when all the people were baptised, and when Jesus also had been baptised and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." (Luke 3:21-22) [emphasis added]

The Holy Spirit was active in Jesus life:

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness (Luke 4:1)

We are baptised in the Holy Spirit:

"I have baptised you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit." (Mark 1:8)

The Holy Spirit helps us speak about God:

"And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit". (Mark 13:11)

The Holy Spirit is a gift of God's presence to us:

"How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13)

The Holy Spirit is a Helper for us:

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you". (John 14:26)

When Jesus died, rose again and ascended into heaven He sent the Holy Spirit in His place:

Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit". (John 20:21-22)

The Holy Spirit gives us power to live the way God wants us to:

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

When we believe Jesus died for us we receive the Holy Spirit:

And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". (Acts 2:38)

The Holy Spirit gives us hope & reminds us of God's love:

And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Romans 5:5)

Our bodies become a dwelling place, or temple, of the Holy Spirit:

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, (1 Corinthians 6:19)

Only true believers of Jesus have the Holy Spirit:

No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:3)

The Holy Spirit is our security that we are going to heaven and will have an inheritance from God:

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

The Holy Spirit gives us joy:

And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 1:6)

The Holy Spirit performs miracles through people:

While God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. (Hebrews 2:4)

In summary the Holy Spirit was involved in creation, is involved in salvation, and in heaven. The Holy Spirit is God as only God can do these things. The Holy Spirit comforts God's people, guides them and is the promise of a future in heaven.

He is a gift given to us by God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit is God dwelling in and with his people. The Holy Spirit will take us home one day, but until then He is showing us how to live for God in a world that is opposed to God.
