Question

Can God really heal people?

Answer

Thank you for asking your question about God healing today.

Firstly, I would strongly encourage you to speak to a medical practitioner regarding your health and any health matters to be directed to them.

It is important to say that because man turned away from God, sickness and death has come into the world. The Bible teaches that God never intended man to die or be sick, but to live with Him in perfect harmony.

However man choose to turn away from God and they led to death and sickness coming into the world. The Bible says:

God said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:17-19)

God did not want to be separated from man, but sin separates us.

This is why God sent his own Son Jesus to earth. Jesus lived a perfect life without ever sinning. Jesus then died in our place to pay the punishment for our sin and wrongdoing. If you put your faith in Christ Jesus then your sin is forgiven and your relationship with God can be restored. Jesus made a way for us to be right with God.

When Jesus lived he also healed many people as a sign that he was from God, that he was God and that God was making all things new. A good example of where Jesus healed someone’s sin and sickness is here:

And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your bed and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--he said to the paralytic-- "I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home." (Mark 2:4-11)

Jesus dealt with the more important issue of sin forgiveness first, and then healed the man. The most important question for you is: are your sins forgiven? Faith in Jesus' death and resurrection means all your sin can be forgiven and you can go to heaven!

Now regarding healing we do believe that God can and does heal people today. The Bible teaches that we should pray for healing and ask the leaders of Churches to also pray for us, but there are two important conditions: first that God gives a special gift of faith to the leaders that the sick person will be healed; and second, that the sick person is not only requesting healing but restoration to fellowship with God:

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:14-15)

All healing of sickness is just a sign of a better thing that is coming in heaven when there will never again be any sin or sickness. Healing may or may not come, but heaven can be assured if you trust in Christ!

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." (Revelation 21:1-4)
