Ask a questionQ & A
How do I know the Holy Spirit is in me?
Thank you very much for asking such an important question about the Holy Spirit.
I will seek to briefly answer your question the best I can based on what the Bible teaches. We must understand that the Holy Spirit is God. The God of the Bible is one God, and three persons: Father, Son (Jesus), and Spirit. The term Trinity doesn't appear in the Bible but the understanding of God being one in three persons is clear in the Bible.
The term Trinity is a teaching that helps explain the biblical truth of who God really is. The doctrine of the Trinity does not teach there are three separate gods - there is just one. They are of one substance and power who have eternally existed as three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Spirit.
The Holy Spirit therefore has eternally existed. It is not that we seek the Holy Spirit or desire to have the Holy Spirit in us, but rather he desires to make Jesus known to us. It is the Holy Spirit who seeks to regenerate us: He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5).
Having established who the Holy Spirit is, we must engage with the Bible further in order to answer your question fully. A convicting question that is asked to us is who can say, 'I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin'? (Proverbs 20:9) The answer is simple: no one.
Jesus Christ however, did not commit any sin; He also had a pure heart. He alone could successfully die on the cross as a substitute for our sin because he was God become man; the God-man, the Messiah, the Saviour.
Through Christ's redemptive work we are united with Him (Romans 6:1-14). Jesus' ministry on earth was done by the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:18). Likewise, by the Holy Spirit we are united with Christ and do the work of God by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ put our sin to death on the cross, and gives us new life by his resurrection. We do not worship a dead God, but a living God - Jesus is alive. He says "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me" (Matthew 28:18).
If you have repented of your sin and trusted in Jesus for salvation the Holy Spirit unites us to Christ and dwells in us (2 Timothy 1:14; 1 Corinthians 6:19). The Bible clearly teaches that because Christ has died for our sins, if we have faith in Him we receive eternal life - God forgives us of our sin: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20).
In summary, the question you have asked has a number of answers depending on the reason for why you asked the question. The Holy Spirit only dwells within those who have received Christ as their Saviour. It is the Holy Spirit who convicts us of our sin and reveals to us who Jesus is and what he did for us (John 16:8-11). The Bible is clear that those who have received Jesus as their means for salvation and the only way to eternal life (John 3:16), then they have received the Holy Spirit.
Moreover, Jesus is the head of the Church (Colossians 1:18), and each converted Christian is added to the Church. The Church is the body of Christ, and is Christ's representative and witness on earth just like Israel was to the other nations in the Old Testament. If you have repented of your sin, and have by faith received Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour then the Bible is clear that you have a relationship with God and therefore have the Holy Spirit within you (Ephesians 1:13-14), working in you, and sanctifying you until your death or until Christ returns where you will be glorified.
Read Galatians 5:16-25. It speaks of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in a person. When a person receives the Holy Spirit, he is made new. Although you will continue to sin for the rest of your life, the Holy Spirit is still at work within you, developing your spiritual life, killing your sin, and as a result, you become more like Christ. Your attitude toward sin, and the world should have changed. Instead of loving sin, you should now love Christ for being punished for your sin and love him instead.
You will not reach perfection in this life, but Christians love God so much that we strive to be more like Him everyday by loving God more and expressing that love by loving others (Mark 12:30-31). Continue to pray, to study the Bible, and to ask God to give you the assurance you are looking for. Dwell on Jesus' own words here: "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgement, but has passed from death to life." (John 5:24).
In summary, the Holy Spirit is God, part of the Trinity, and is active in the life of every Christian. The Holy Spirit is given to each of us as a sign of the good work that God has done and to encourage us that we are going to heaven. The Holy Spirit helps to guide us into truth and helps us to reject sin. The gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit is given to people as He determines. I encourage you to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in your life and to expect him to move mightily!
