Question

Why did Jesus say that if He does not go the helper will not come?

Answer

Thank you for your question about the Holy Spirit.

In your question, you give a reference to the words of Jesus: "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you" (John 16:7)

While Jesus was on earth, though he was fully God, he was also fully human. This meant that Jesus experienced the same human limitations that we do. He got tired and slept, he got hungry and thirsty and he could only be in one place at one time.

Jesus promised that he would send the Holy Spirit. Jesus told the disciples "you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit, being Spirit and not constrained by a human body, means that his power can fill the whole earth.

When Jesus returned to the Father, he fulfilled the promise he had made by sending the Holy Spirit. You can read about this in Acts 2. From that time to today, the Holy Spirit has been in each Christian, giving them gifts and transforming them more into the image of Jesus. People have been witnesses for Jesus to the end of the earth, telling others about the life changing work of Jesus Christ.

Do you have the Holy Spirit in you? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, placing your trust in him to save you and forgive you of your sin, then you have the Holy Spirit within you. The Holy Spirit is given as a sign of this saving work and the you are going to heaven when you die.

When you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:13-14).

In summary, while Jesus was on earth, he was confined by the human limitation of being in one place at one time. However, as the Holy Spirit is not restricted by being in one place at one time, this means that the power of God can be throughout the earth. If you are a believer in Jesus, the Holy Spirit is given to you as a sign of this saving work.
